The conference will focus the theme, “Making Teaching Matter.” It will be hosted November 13-15 at Cragun’s Resort near Brainerd.

Why “Making Teaching Matter?”

Expectations for today’s professional teachers have redesigned teaching and made it a more demanding profession. Research continues to demonstrate that great teaching is more important than ever to student achievement.

So how do we make teaching matter in Minnesota? Join us at the conference (registration opens in July) to explore this question with Wessling and many other education professionals.

Wessling Served as National Spokesperson

Wessling was named 2010 National Teacher of the Year by President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony in April 2010. As the 60th National Teacher of the Year, she completed a 12-month term as a full-time national and international spokesperson for education, presenting more than 250 talks and workshops in 39 states and countries.

Now a 17-year veteran of the high school English classroom and a member of the faculty at Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa, Wessling has taught courses ranging from at-risk to Advanced Placement. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher since 2005.

Currently Wessling maintains a hybrid teaching position which lets her be present in the classroom while allowing her to write, speak and work on teacher leadership initiatives around the country. Wessling is Laureate Emeritus for the non-profit Teaching Channel. She is an author of Supporting Students in a Time of Core Standards and has launched her own blog, Open Teaching.
