The Minnesota Department of Education will host regional meetings throughout the state to discuss the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Commissioner Brenda Cassellius and staff want to learn and hear thoughts about ESSA and the vision so far for Minnesota’s state plan.
ESSA, the nation’s latest pre-kindergarten through grade 12 education law, was signed into law in December 2015. It’s the newest version of the 50-year-old federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act and replaces the 2001 re-authorization known as No Child Left Behind. View the ESSA in Minnesota Fact Sheet.
All states are required to submit a new state plan to the U.S. Department of Education for the 2017-2018 school year. Minnesota has had its own accountability system since 2012 and is now planning for a transition to the new law.
MDE already started gathering feedback with a Large Stakeholder meeting in July. View the PowerPoint from that meeting.
