Bills have been presented in the House and Senate to improve concurrent enrollment opportunities in Minnesota. The House bill, sponsored by Rep. Jim Davnie (D-Minneapolis), will be heard Tuesday in the House Education Policy Committee. Princeton Superintendent Julia Espe and several Princeton students will testify in support of the bill.
A companion bill also has been presented in the Senate by Sen. Greg Clausen (D-Apple Valley).
SF995 and HF1217 aims to fully fund concurrent enrollment at 100 percent, provide scholarships for teachers and help underrepresented communities. Here’s a glance at what the bills would achieve:
- Develop new concurrent enrollment courses that satisfy the elective standard for career and technical education
- Provide grants to postsecondary institutions currently sponsoring a concurrent enrollment course to expand existing programs
- Provide grants to community organizations to disseminate information to students and their families about dual-credit opportunities in high school
- Funding to send teachers to training programs and follow-up workshops provided by an eligible
postsecondary institution - Provide funding for training necessary to be qualified to teach college courses through concurrent enrollment
