MREA is seeking applications for four open seats on its Board of Directors beginning Jan. 1, 2025. The MREA Board invites members to apply and help build on MREA’s success by contributing knowledge, expertise, and energy. The application deadline is October 20.

2025 Board Vacancies

MREA’s four membership zones are each represented on the Board by one school administrator, one teacher, one school board member, and one at-large member. MREA member districts elect these 16 directors.  View membership zones. View current Board.

Four elected positions will be open in three zones for 2025:

North Central Zone

  • At-Large | 4-Year Term | 2025-2028

South Central Zone

  • Administrator |4-Year Term | 2025-2028
  • School Board | 2-Year Term | 2025-2026

South Zone

  • School Board | 4-Year Term | 2025-2028

The North Zone does not have an elected director opening for 2025.

Time Commitment

Board Meetings

Directors are expected to attend new director orientation and 4 regular Board meetings per year. Additional special meetings also may be called by the Board President.

Meeting locations vary from northern to southern Minnesota and may require traveling long distances. In-person meetings are held over two days, starting late afternoon/evening and continuing in the morning. Online meeting times vary based on the agenda. View the 2025 meeting schedule.

Member Meetings & Advocacy Leadership

Board members attend an online Fall Member Meeting, the MREA Greater Education Summit, and the Annual Membership Meeting. Through active participation in these meetings, directors serve as MREA ambassadors and provide leadership for educational advocacy at local, state, national levels.

Expense Reimbursement

MREA reimburses travel expenses and provides meals and lodging per Board policies. Directors may also be eligible for per diem. Districts are reimbursed substitute classroom teacher pay when a teacher serves on the board.

Qualifications

Members ready to be visible, engaged leaders for MREA must meet these qualifications at application and for the duration of their MREA director term:

    • Represent a “full” (non-introductory) member of MREA in the zone in which the vacancy exists
    • Ability to travel and attend overnight meetings
    • Availability for all 2025 meeting dates
    • Willingness to actively participate in MREA governance
    • Strong commitment to advocating for Greater Minnesota students
    • School Board directors must actively serve on a member-district board of education in the zone in which the opening exists
    • Teacher directors must hold a MN teaching license and be employed under the terms of a teacher’s master contract with a member district in the zone in which the opening exists
    • Administrator directors must hold a MN Board of School Administrators licensed position with a member district in the zone in which the opening exists
    • At-Large directors must maintain employment or residency within a member district in the zone in which the opening exists

Elections

Voting instructions and ballot links will be emailed late November to the primary contact person for each voting-eligible member organization.
