Celebrating Katie Melgaard, A Teacher of Passion & Purpose
Science Teacher // Marshall County Central Public Schools // 2024 North Zone MREA Educator of Excellence
In Katie Melgaard’s classrooms, science isn’t just taught—it comes alive. Her approach to teaching transcends textbooks and lectures; it’s an invitation for students to immerse themselves in the complexities and wonders of the world around them. Mrs. Melgaard’s dedication to her craft, unwavering enthusiasm, and multifaceted involvement in her school community have set her apart as an educator of excellence, deserving of recognition.
Mrs. Melgaard’s colleagues are unequivocal in their praise. “Katie was born to do this,” says Marshall County Central High School Principal Brian Longerbone capturing the essence of a teacher whose passion is palpable. Indeed, it’s not just the depth of her knowledge that impresses, but the way she shares it. With infectious energy, Mrs. Melgaard engages her students, sparking their curiosity. “I love seeing the students start getting excited about science,” she says. “I love helping them realize how complicated the world is and how we try to figure it out.”
Her students, too, feel the impact of her teaching. Attending her classes is described as a relief, a safe space where learning is fun and approachable. One student put it best: “She’s always making sure that everybody has a good time and everybody’s doing their best.” Katie’s enthusiasm is so genuine that it inspires confidence and participation. She’s known for explaining complex topics, like why the body releases carbon dioxide during digestion, in ways that resonate with students, blending humor, clarity, and scientific insight.
Mrs. Melgaard’s influence extends well beyond the classroom walls. She leads a River Watch team, guiding students as they monitor the local river’s health and contribute vital data to state environmental efforts. It’s a hands-on experience that teaches students the importance of stewardship and the real-world application of science. Additionally, Mrs. Melgaard co-teaches the school’s robotics and drone teams, programs that have soared under her leadership. Principal Longerbone jokes that they “had to create a trophy case just for our robotics and drone team,” a testament to her dedication and the team’s outstanding success.
Her presence is more than academic. Mrs. Melgaard is known for her supportive, “soccer mom” spirit, cheering on her students during competitions and ensuring they feel valued and encouraged. One student remarked how her supportive nature brings calm and confidence to the team, whether at school or during high-stress competitions.
Mrs. Melgaard’s role in the school community is as multifaceted as it is essential. Beyond teaching and advising, she’s even been known to drive a bus when needed. This willingness to step up exemplifies her approach: there’s no job too big or too small if it means supporting her students and school. “She does a little bit of everything for us,” Principal Longerbone notes, highlighting her versatility and dedication.
What truly sets Mrs. Melgaard apart is her commitment to lifelong learning, both for herself and as an example for her students. “I want the students to know that there’s always something new to learn, and so I have to model that for them,” she says. This mindset reinforces her role as a forward-thinking leader, always adapting and finding ways to grow.
Receiving this award affirms that people see and appreciate the heart and countless hours she invests. As she puts it, “All teachers are doing the best they can, and it’s really nice to see that people are watching and recognizing the effort.” Katie Melgaard’s story is one of passion, resilience, and boundless dedication—proof that the greatest teachers don’t just educate; they inspire, lead, and transform the lives of those they teach.
Congratulations Mrs. Melgaard on being named a 2024 MREA Educator of Excellence in the North Zone. Mrs. Melgaard was honored and celebrated in November at the MREA Greater Education Summit at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd.
