CW-FIT Classroom Management Research

MREA and the University of Kansas invite MREA member district K-8 schools to participate in a research study on CW-FIT (Class-Wide Function-Related Intervention Teams), a positive behavioral intervention that integrates naturally into classroom routines. Designed as a Tier 1 universal support within MTSS or PBIS, CW-FIT promotes a positive classroom environment by focusing on four key components:

  • Lessons and Pre-Corrects
  • Teams for Group Contingency
  • Goals and Praise
  • Rewards

This opportunity is ideal for schools looking for data-driven solutions to classroom management challenges while contributing to meaningful research that will expand the CW-FIT evidence base to rural settings.

Recognized by What Works Clearinghouse with the highest rating of evidence, “Meets Standards Without Reservations,” CW-FIT has been shown to increase teacher praise, improve classroom climate, and boost on-task behavior, leading to increased instructional time. The intervention is easy to implement without disrupting academic instruction.

Benefits of Participation

Schools joining the study will receive $20,000 in funding ($10,000 during the participation year and $10,000 the following year) to support professional development and conference attendance. Participating teachers will benefit from:

  • A $1,000 stipend and a tablet for study tasks (the tablet is theirs to keep).
  • Free professional development and CW-FIT certification.
  • Access to a free online video-sharing platform.

In addition, schools will identify one Rural CW-FIT Coach, who will also receive stipends for their contributions.

What’s Involved?

  • School Requirements:
    • Recruit at 2-6 general education teachers for grades K-8 (core content).
    • Designate a Rural CW-FIT Coach to oversee implementation.
  • Teachers and Coaches:
    • Teachers will complete a 1.5-hour online CW-FIT training and implement the intervention for 6-8 weeks in one class period.
    • Rural Coaches will attend a brief meeting with their National Trainer and provide feedback on implementation through video uploads.

Act Now!

For next year we are looking for 6 schools to participate. We are accepting participants on a first-come first-served basis and aim to have all schools enrolled by the end of March for participation in the 2025-2026 school year. This timeline ensures ample preparation time for training and implementation.

Together, we can enhance classroom environments and contribute to impactful research that benefits rural educators and students alike!
