MREA Announces Aaron Fischer as Executive Director
The Minnesota Rural Education Association (MREA) Board of Directors has announced that Aaron Fischer has been selected as the organization’s next Executive Director.
Fischer currently serves as Superintendent of Esko Public Schools, a role he has held for the past 20 years. In total, he brings 27 years of educational leadership experience to the position, almost all rooted in rural Minnesota communities.
Fischer began his career in education as a teacher at Willow River Public Schools. Following budget cuts, he and his wife—also a teacher—spent two years at Forest Lake Public Schools before returning to Willow River. There, Fischer served in a variety of leadership roles including teacher, yearbook advisor, activities director, principal, community education director and Title I lead coordinator.
In 2004, Fischer joined Esko Public Schools, where he served two years as principal before becoming superintendent. As part of his involvement at Esko, he also coaches basketball, which he says keeps him engaged with students.
Throughout his career, Fischer has intentionally chosen to serve rural schools.
“I’ve always been drawn to rural education because of the strong connection between schools and their communities,” Fischer said. “In rural districts, you have the opportunity to wear many hats, support students in and out of the classroom, and truly be part of the fabric of the community. I’m honored to have been selected as the next Executive Director of MREA and look forward to working alongside member districts to advocate for rural education across Minnesota.”
Fischer said he is especially excited to build relationships with MREA’s member districts and staff while continuing the organization’s strong tradition of advocacy at the Capitol.
“MREA is an outstanding organization that has long been a leading voice for rural schools and communities,” Fischer said. “I’m eager to listen to our members, learn from them, and advocate on their behalf as we continue strengthening opportunities for students in Greater Minnesota.”
MREA Board President Jeff Drake, Superintendent of Fergus Falls Public Schools, said the board is confident Fischer’s experience and leadership will guide the organization forward.
“Aaron’s deep roots in rural education, his proven track record in leadership and advocacy, and his commitment to building strong relationships make him an exceptional fit for this role. We are confident he will continue to strengthen MREA’s voice for rural schools across Minnesota.”
Fischer and his wife Brenda share a commitment to education. She currently serves as Dean of St. Scholastica’s Stender School of Leadership, Business, and Professional Studies. Together, they have three grown sons residing throughout Minnesota.
Fischer will begin his role as Executive Director on July 1, 2026 – the beginning of MREA’s fiscal year.
