Paraprofessionals are a valuable yet often underutilized resource in addressing teacher shortages across Greater Minnesota. These individuals bring a wealth of practical expertise, honed through their firsthand experiences in the classroom. Acting as apprentices in many ways, paraprofessionals play an active role in pedagogy and observe teaching practices up close, embodying the principles of learning by doing.

Their day-to-day involvement equips them with a deep understanding of the skills and responsibilities essential for effective teaching. This on-the-job learning fosters a sense of self-efficacy that traditional teacher candidates typically take years to develop. Moreover, paraprofessionals build strong connections with their schools and communities, making them deeply committed to their schools.

Despite their potential, many paraprofessionals face significant barriers—such as financial constraints, geographic limitations, time pressures, and family responsibilities—that prevent them from pursuing a teaching degree. To address these challenges, Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) has developed a flexible online program designed to help paraprofessionals achieve licensure and make their dream of becoming a teacher a reality.  There are a variety of scholarships available, including the North Star Promise (NSP) Scholarship program to reduce financial barriers.  This program provides a tuition and fee-free pathway to higher education for eligible Minnesota residents, making it easier than ever to achieve academic and professional goals.

Feedback from online students reveals that the online program allows students to balance their coursework with their jobs at school. Students indicated the curriculum has proven to be a valuable resource, enabling participants to fulfill lifelong aspirations while applying their real-world knowledge to classroom learning. Faculty members have noted that the contributions of these students—often more mature—enrich the learning experience for everyone involved.

While MSUM’s program removes many obstacles, one challenge remains: the need for encouragement. As one student shared, “Going back to college as a 51-year-old is scary.” She had thought about it for years but needed a push—“the tap on the shoulder”—to believe she could succeed. Encouragement from an administrator provided her the confidence to enroll, and now she’s in her second year, well on her way to achieving her goal of obtaining licensure.  She plans on teaching at the school where she currently works.

Administrators have the power to make a meaningful impact. By offering a simple “tap” on the shoulder, they can motivate paraprofessionals to take the next step toward pursuing a teaching career. Many paraprofessionals have likely contemplated this path for years, and a few words of encouragement could be the spark they need to move forward.
