Minnesota State Senate Hearings on Gun Violence Prevention & Potential Special Session

Last week the Minnesota State Senate held two hearings regarding gun violence prevention measures as Governor Walz continues to push the idea of calling the legislature in for a special session to tackle these issues. These hearings brought together a bipartisan group of lawmakers to discuss possible legislative actions to address gun violence across the state.

Key topics discussed:

  • A ban of sales of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines
  • Safe storage requirements
  • School safety initiatives and funding
  • Mental health resources related to gun violence prevention

The hearings made clear that gun violence prevention remains a priority issue for many Minnesotans, but that bipartisan support for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines is necessary for such legislation to advance in the state Senate. At this time, it does not appear that bipartisan support exists in the Senate, and likely neither in the state House where there is a 67-67 partisan tie.

In response to the Senate hearings and ongoing public debate, Governor Tim Walz has publicly signaled the possibility of calling a special legislative session focused specifically on gun violence prevention. While no official announcement has been made as of today, discussions are ongoing between the Governor’s office and legislative leaders.

The Governor has emphasized the need for legislative action to address gun violence. If called, a special session could be convened as early as the coming weeks. Implications for School Districts include potential legislation that may impact school safety protocols, funding for security infrastructure, and mental health services.
