About the Board of School Administrators

Responsibilities: The board shall license school administrators. The board shall adopt rules to license school administrators under Chapter 14. Other than the rules transferred to the board under section 122A.27, subdivision 4, the board may not adopt or amend rules under this section until the rules are approved by law. The rules shall include the licensing of persons who have successfully completed alternative preparation programs under section 122A.27 or other alternative competency-based preparation programs. The board may enter into agreements with the board of teaching regarding multiple license matters. The board consists of ten members appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Senate, including at least: one elementary school principal; one secondary school principal; one higher education faculty member in an education administration program approved by the board; one school superintendent; one classroom teacher; one community education director and a special education director; and two members of the public, one of whom must be a present or former school board member. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, at MDE in Roseville.

Responsibilities: The board establishes rules governing the education, licensing and re-licensing of teachers. The board consists of eleven members including six classroom teachers and one school administrator who must be fully licensed for the position he or she holds and have at least five years teaching experience in Minnesota; one higher education representative who must be a faculty member preparing teachers; and three members of the public, two of whom must be present or former members of school boards. No member may be reappointed for more than one additional term. Monthly meetings are held at 1500 W. Hwy 36 in Roseville.
